Van-Edremit Places to Visit and See
Dilkaya Cemetery Mound: There are hundreds of tombs of different types in the mound located in the Dilkaya village of Edremit. In particular, a lot of information has been obtained in terms of burial forms belonging to the pre-Urartian and Urartian period. As a result of the excavations carried out in the mound, three settlements were found. At the same time, many objects made using animal bones, clay and woods have emerged, revealing the development of textiles in this region.
Some of the tombs found in Dilkaya Mezarlık Mound are early iron age tombs. In these tombs, it was seen that simple earthen tombs and chamber tomb structures were applied. Iron objects and forms in various containers were found in the graves as grave gifts. Based on these materials found, the tombs were dated to BC. It is estimated to date from 1100-1000. During the Middle Iron Age, the Urartians began to settle in this mound area. Medieval people buried their dead in simple stone tombs or earthen tombs. Grave gifts were very modest. These modest gifts reveal the economic situation of the buried people. It is not known what happened to the people here after the Urartians.
Şamran (Menua) Water Canal: The 51 kilometers long Şamran water canal is a marvel of water engineering both for Turkey and for the world. Şamran Water Canal, 70 percent of which is located within the borders of Edremit district, gives life to agriculture in the regions it passes through. Thanks to the water canal, agriculture can be done on an area of approximately 5000 hectares. Şamran Water Canal is the largest water source in the Van region in terms of the amount of water it carries. The Şamran Water Canal, which was built by carving the limestone rocks, was directed primarily to the west and then to the south. The water channel with a width of 3.5-4 meters has a depth of 1.5-2 meters. The weirs, which were opened for irrigation purposes, are still intact today. Gardens identified with the hanging gardens of Babylon were arranged on the artificial terraces in Kadenbastı. The gardens are approximately 3 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide and are located on these semi-moon-like terraces. This place is called "Auspicious place" by the name of the people.
Alniunu City and Stone Workshop: The very hard and yellowish limestones used in the construction of palaces, temples, castle walls and buildings, which reflect the most beautiful examples of architectural structures built by the Urartians, come from two quarries, one of which is located in Edremit and its surroundings. A large stone workshop and a settlement were discovered on a flat hill. Although there are very heavy and unfinished limestones in this region, it is believed that this region is a stone workshop due to its similarity to the stones used in Sardun.
understood and referred to as such. The fact that the Alninunu City and Stone Workshop is 17 kilometers away from the Van castle and located on a high slope from the Van plain made it easier for the prepared stone products to be lowered into the Van Lake and transported to the Van castle.
Kız Dam: Located in Kadenbastı, Kız Damı Cave is 10-12 meters high. It is located on a hill to the south of the Shamran Canal. Inside the Kız Damı Cave, there are columns, hearths and a toilet canal in the northern part.
